Wish List 2008 - 2009
- Secondary school tuition. The cost of sending one child through one year of secondary school is $120 USD.
This includes fees, books and uniforms.
- Private boarding school tuition. Private schools will enroll a child who did not pass the leaving exam.
Boarding schools cost anywhere from $300 - $900 USD for one year. Some boarding
schools will enroll kids who are behind academically and work with them until
they catch up.
- Vocational school tuition. It costs about $250 per year to send a young boy or girl to
a 2-year accredited government-run vocational school. Upon completion, each graduate is awarded certification in their career field of choice.
- School uniforms. We can buy a school uniform shirt for 850 tsh, (about 85 cents US). School pants go
for about $1.00 USD. We can buy shoes from the local shoe man for about $3.00 USD each pair.
- Teacher salaries. A teachers salary can range from $50 - 80 USD per month.
- School building fund. Currently we are working with a man named
Prosper Ndabishuriye from Burundi to
complete construction of a school at the cost of $5000 USD per classroom. Future plans are for teachers quarters and office.
- Sponsor a pre-school renovation. In February 2008, we created "learning walls"
in two Mbeya pre-schools. Demand for this service expanded this program to several locations outside of Mbeya and more are planned.
This modest service includes minor building renovations and paint supplies which will cost no more than $150 - 200 USD
per classroom. This is one of our most successful programs to date
- Sponsor a school library. Both pre-schools we are renovating have no books.
We can purchase books here at a lower cost than by post.
- Volunteer, or sponsor one. It is cheap to live here, but expensive to get here.
Help defray the cost for a talented, energetic person interested in on-site participation in our programs.
- Basic medical supplies. Medicine is cheap here. We can get a thousand tabs
of 250 mg Amoxicillin for about $5.00 USD. We can deworm 60 kids for about $20 USD (two doses each).
